What is an XRechnung?

XRechnung is the German standard for electronic invoices. It is based on the European standard EN 16931 and was first required for invoices to public authorities in Germany. Since 1 January 2025 every business in Germany must be able to receive e-invoices from other businesses, and XRechnung is one of the formats used for that.

An XRechnung is not a PDF. It is an XML file that accounting software reads automatically. If you open it in a text editor you see only code. That is where this viewer helps.

What you see in the viewer

  • The amount due and the due date, at the top.
  • The IBAN, BIC and payment reference, ready to copy for your banking app.
  • The buyer reference (often the Leitweg-ID for public authorities), order number and contract number.
  • All invoice lines with quantity, unit, unit price and VAT rate.
  • The VAT breakdown and the totals, exactly as stated in the file.
  • Attachments embedded in the XRechnung, such as a delivery note or timesheet, which you can open with one click.

UBL or CII: both work

XRechnung exists in two technical forms, called syntaxes: UBL (the root element is Invoice or CreditNote) and UN/CEFACT CII (the root element is CrossIndustryInvoice). Invoice Viewer recognises both automatically and shows the version, for example "XRechnung 3.0".

How it works

From XML code to a clear invoice in three steps

  1. Drop the file

Drag the .xml file or the PDF onto the box, or choose it from your computer. A ZIP with several invoices works too (Pro).

  2. Read the invoice

You see seller, buyer, lines, VAT and the amount due, laid out like a normal invoice, in your language.

  3. Pay, print or file it

Copy the IBAN and payment reference, open embedded attachments, print the invoice or save it as PDF for your records.

Your invoices stay on your device

Invoices contain business details, bank accounts and prices. That is why Invoice Viewer reads them inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded: not to us and not to anyone else. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and it still works.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an XRechnung without software?

Drop the XML file onto the box above. Your browser turns it into a readable invoice. You do not need to install anything.

Can I convert an XRechnung to PDF?

Yes. Open it, then click "Print / save as PDF" and choose "Save as PDF". Keep the XML file as the original.

What is the Leitweg-ID?

The Leitweg-ID is the routing number of a German public authority. In an XRechnung it is placed in the buyer reference field (BT-10). The viewer shows it at the top of the invoice.

Is my XRechnung safe here?

Yes. The file is processed in your browser only and never uploaded.
